The Summer is officially upon us and that means touring for me, which I LOVE! I do get a number of questions about my dance career and how it all works. When it comes to touring a dance piece we have to have intensive rehearsals. I have been performing with Folk Dance Remixed since 2013. Folk Dance Remixed is a company that fuses traditional English Folk Dances such as Morris Dance and Clogging with Hip-Hop. Check out my post ‘Folk Dance Remixed-The Journey so far‘ for more information on the company and photos of our previous tours.
Rehearsals can be shattering and intense, but a lot of fun. This year we are continuing to perform ‘Step Hop House’ which is a dynamic dance piece. As we have new cast members we went through the entire piece which was great as I had to refresh my memory. All the dancers have incredibly diverse backgrounds when it comes to dance, some are experienced in Bollywood, Contemporary, Flat Footing, Morris Dance, Dancehall, Locking and Commercial Dance. We have a lot of knowledge and backgrounds to play with.
We spend days mastering all the footwork and choreography. Once that’s done, it is time to sort out costumes and have a full dress rehearsal. One of the challenges can be the crazy amount of props we have and the logistics of all of us going around the maypole. The style of costumes we have are a mix of traditional tartan and tweed modernised with our own style. It is full of colour. We all transform into different characters when we perform in our costumes and the children love it.
The rehearsal period is always exciting as it prepares us physically and mentally to perform. We have to build our stamina up as it is a half hour show The piece ‘Step Hop House’ is a fun and creative visual experience for the audience and they also get to interact with us during the ‘Street Dance The Maypole’ workshops. As well as all the props, we work with live musicians which feels amazing when we perform, the vibe is electric. What I really love about performing with Folk Dance Remixed is the family vibe we have, everyone is super friendly and has a lot of respect for each other and it is so much fun! The fact that I can entertain people for a living makes me happy. Do check out Folk Dance Remixed website, Instagram and Twitter to be kept up to date on all our shows and projects. We are really excited of our upcoming shows!
